Applying for / Obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status

If you reside outside of Japan, and do not have resident status in Japan, you will be required to apply for a "student" visa at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country if enrolling in TUS. Possessing a valid "student" visa is a requirement to apply for scholarships in Japan, and thus, it is necessary to obtain a "student" visa as early as possible.
When applying for a visa, first obtain a "Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status (CoE)" from the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau, and use this to apply for a "student" visa to facilitate the screening process. For the "Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)", in addition to the applicant himself/herself applying for the CoE, it is also possible for an agent to apply on your behalf through one of the two methods below.

  • (1) Tokyo University of Science applies on your behalf as an agent
  • (2) A relative, financial supporter, or scholarship provider residing in Japan applies on your behalf as an agent

Please check the Application Guidebook etc. For more information on proxy application.
