Student Delegation Participates in Friendship & Cultural Exchange Event Commemorating 70th Anniversary for Dalian University of Technology in 2019

Japanese

Dalian University of Technology, a leading Chinese science & technology university and Tokyo University of Science (TUS) partner institution, invited TUS students to participate in a friendship & cultural exchange event bringing together Chinese and Japanese students to commemorate the university's 70th anniversary. TUS sent a delegation of 12 students and one professor to Dalian to participate in this event held from April 29 (MON) to May 5 (SUN) 2019.

This program encourages cultural experiences and awareness of different cultures with the aim of fostering closer exchanges between students from China and Japan. Students from 27 Japanese universities, including TUS, participated in this event. Programs included Chinese language lessons, special lectures on cultural understanding, Chinese martial arts, and group discussions to exchange opinions with Chinese students. Dalian University of Technology not only prepared and implemented these programs, it gave thoughtful attention to every detail and consideration, even assigning one volunteer student to assist each visiting Japanese student.

Even though some of the Japanese students were visiting China for the first time, they participated in the programs with a proper awareness of the issues, absorbed many experiences while not being swayed by the media portrayal of Chinese views and Japan / China relations, used both the programs and free time to deepen communication with Chinese students, and developed friendships reaching beyond national borders.

Comments from participating Japanese students (excerpts)
- "My view of China changed. The saying that 'seeing is believing' is true. I learned that regardless of how much information is collected, a first-hand experience can completely change your values and points of view."
- "The diligence of Chinese students is amazing. I was motivated to study harder."
- "I felt that China has made more progress than Japan towards becoming a cashless society. However, I learned that China's cashless structure has both merits and demerits."
- I will keep in touch with the Chinese people I met this time. I hope that Japan and China can become even closer through increasing such connections."
- "I now want to really support students from abroad if they visit the Tokyo University of Science."
