A signing ceremony was held on May 24 (Sat) at the Imperial Hotel (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo) at which His Excellency Mahathir bin Mohamad, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia was officially appointed to the position of global advisor for the Tokyo University of Science.
The market for a college education in Japan is shrinking due to the declining birth rate. Meanwhile, the weighting of gross national product (GDP) to the overall Japanese economy has turned sluggish. Against this backdrop, the Tokyo University of Science has adopted the strategic goal of transforming "from TUS for Japan to TUS for the world." As part of a larger globalization drive to realize this strategic goal, the university appointed His Excellency Mahathir bin Mohamad, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia to the position of global advisor. Mahathir has deep ties with Japanese higher education, particularly his advocating of a "Look East" strategy and his involvement in helping to open the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
Mahathir is expected to provide the university with advice on the best approaches it should take from an Asian perspective.
