Tokyo University of Science, University of Applied Sciences Jena sign Academic Exchange Agreement

The Tokyo University of Science (President: Dr. Shin Takeuchi) and the University of Applied Sciences Jena (Thuringen, Germany; Rector: Professor Gr. G. Beibst) in June 2007 entered into a comprehensive agreement to cooperate in promoting faculty and student exchanges for the purpose of conducting joint research and fostering research and education.

On October 1 a ceremony was held for the signing of an academic exchange agreement as a further development of the original agreement. The two universities plan to extend their collaboration by expanding the fields for joint research, offering mutual recognition of transfer credits between the institutions and investigating the possibilities of establishing double degree programs and joint courses. In accordance with this agreement, the two universities plan to continue joint research until 2010 based on the following standards.

University of Applied Sciences Jena, established in 1991, consists of eight subjects of study including Electrical Engineering, Fundamental Sciences, Medical Engineering & Biotechnology and SciTec.

The university has 4,900 students, 130 faculty members and 215 technicians & administrators. The University of Applied Sciences Jena is relatively new for a German university, but it is home to the renowned optical systems maker Carl-Zeiss and is a science & technology university that has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years.

Main Points of the Agreement:
1. Widening of the research collaboration by including other research groups of the two universities with interest in the fields of materials physics, dielectrics, ferroics, and smart materials.
2. Identifying further possible fields of interest for future joint research activities.
3. Identifying undergraduate or graduate courses of the two universities in which students can study for a period of one or two semesters at the partner institution with a full transfer of credits.
4. Investigating possibilities for the installation of joint courses in which students can earn double degrees from the two universities as well as joint graduation on Master or PhD level.
5. Undertaking activities to secure funding from national and international programmes to support the collaboration.
