Conclusion of an academic exchange agreement with the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Technical University) of Russia

On October 3, 2007, the Tokyo University of Science and the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Technical University) of Russia signed an academic exchange agreement. Established in 1930, this institute (university) is Russia's largest power engineering university and science center. It possesses branch schools in the Russian cities of Smolensk and Voljskiy.

Based on this agreement, both institutions will promote a collaborative relationship through the following activities:
- Instructor exchanges
- Student exchanges
- Planning and implementation of academic cooperation
- Exchange of academic information and publications
- Promotion of other academic activities

MPEI(TU) maintains seven science and technology institutes, three special faculties (including a preparatory faculty and faculty for skills-raising of specialists), 70 departments, 550 educational laboratories, and 100 research laboratories.

- MPEI(TU) was the first university to install a heat and electricity-generating facility
- The Russian government's Ministry of Education officially recognizes MPEI(TU) as an important science and technology university in Russia.
- It was ranked No. 84 in Newsweek's 2006 ranking of the world's top universities.
- It seeks to make a social contribution through practical education by, among other approaches, requiring undergraduates to do an internship at a domestic or overseas company for several months before graduating.
- The BlackBerry, a handheld terminal that is enjoying considerable popularity in North America, is an invention of a MPEI(TU) graduate.
