Tokyo University of Science (President: Masatoshi Ishikawa) has established the Museum of Modern Science at its Kagurazaka Campus as a facility to introduce the university's founding spirit, which is "to make the spread of science the foundation of national development". The "Satoshi Omura Memorial Exhibition Hall" will be opened in the same facility to commemorate the achievements of Dr. Satoshi Omura, the 2015 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine and the only Japanese laureate from a private university.
In this exhibit room, we display materials that introduce the days when Dr. Omura was teaching at a high school and studying at our graduate school, as well as an actual nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) machine, a research device used in those days to determine the structure of organic materials. Dr. Omura has long been involved in research to discover compounds derived from microorganisms that could lead to medicine. In addition, books and colored papers donated by Dr. Omura will be on display to serve as a guide for young scientists, especially junior and senior high school students who wish to study chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, and other sciences.
