Assistant Professor Machida et al.’s paper was selected for a cover art. This study successfully investigated the crystallization process of glass using luminescence properties of rare-earth ions. It is very useful to investigate the structure and composition of glass used in extreme environments such as space “Assessment of the Crystallization Process of CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 Glass Probed with Tb3+ Luminescence“

Professor Sugiyama’s research group published the paper “Elucidation of electrical properties of undoped and Sb-induced Cu2SnS3 (CTS) thin films and degradation properties on CTS thin films and solar cells by intentional proton irradiation”. This study clarified the radiation (proton beam) durability and degradation mechanisms of “solar cells made of inexpensive and common materials” consisting of copper, tin, and sulfur when used in space. It was found that the radiation durability is about 100 times higher than that of conventional silicon-based solar cells, indicating that the materials have high expectations not only for solar cells but also for semiconductor devices for space use
