ABOUT IDM

Why design thinking @ The Tokyo University of Science?

The Department of International Digital and Design Management (IDM) will be established in the School of Management at The Tokyo University of Science in the 2021 academic year.

Why has the Tokyo University of Science created a department focused on design?

"Design" goes deeper than the appearance of a product
like a car or the forms and colors on a page or a screen.
Design-driven management is more essential than ever for businesses and so much more.

"How can we make people more comfortable on their commutes to work and school?";
"How can we reduce food loss?";
"How can we prevent global warming and water shortages?":

These are "wicked problems" which are difficult to solve due to complicated and entangled causes that involve human emotions and situational factors and thus are even hard to recognize a priori. Therefore, to solve such problems, it is essential to gain the ability to “empathize” with the issues people face.

A collaborative approach is at the core of design-driven management. To tackle such complex issues, we need to engage and involve people with different backgrounds, talents, and expertise.

The Department of International Digital and Design Management aims to foster leaders
who can boldly face the "wicked problems" of an uncertain time by bringing diverse insights together.

We are looking for:

  • ◯Students who want to make use of their design abilities in society
  • ◯Students who want to tenaciously challenge themselves with issues that have yet to be answered
  • ◯Students who want to work together with people from many different backgrounds
  • ◯Students who want to play active roles on the international stage
We are looking for

IDM's ideal problem-solving approach

Our approach to international digital and design management

  • ◯Define the problem
  • ◯What do we need to solve it?
  • ◯How can we realize what we need?
  • ◯Draw up a blueprint of the solution
  • ◯Solution to a wicked problem
IDM's ideal problem-solving approach

Our graduates will be:

  • ◯Talented people who can bring together different fields
  • ◯Talented people who can shape things themselves
  • ◯Talented people who can take the lead in solving global issues
Our graduates will be

OUR VISION

Three keys to fostering innovative talents

IDM aims to foster innovative talents who will use three competencies to solve wicked problems: the skill to express their designs, fundamental knowledge of digital technology, and the ability to interact with different cultures.

Four places of learning

Oshamambe Campus, Hokkaido
(first year, all students live in dorms)

Oshamambe Campus

New students at IDM will spend their first year in the beautiful setting of Oshamambe Town, Hokkaido, living in dormitories on campus. By living together and learning in teams, they will gain social skills Google and Facebook, two of the world’s largest corporations in tech industry were started by innovators in university dorms. An on-campus living environment encourages students to think freely without being constrained by existing value systems, and to foster solid, basic academic skills that support a free-thinking mindset. Another reward students will gain in their first year of study is the ability to think with both global and local perspectives. IDM's core subjects are Tech Foundation, which imparts literacy in digital technology, and the Co-design Project, which focuses on solving real issues in a local setting. Altogether, first-year students will receive a holistic education that encompasses experiences and knowledge from everyday life, rigorous learning, and extracurricular activities as foundations for advanced studies in Tokyo.

Kagurazaka Campus, Tokyo

From their second year onwards, students will attend the Kagurazaka Campus in the heart of Tokyo. Most of their classroom time will be spent in the Fujimi Building of the School of Management, a new facility completed in 2016. The campus is situated in a lively, pleasant neighborhood with excellent access to public transportation. The location is also ideal for collaborations with other faculties and universities.

Ireland Study Tour

To wrap up their course work on an “Introduction to European Studies” in the first semester of their second year, students will visit Ireland for one week from the beginning of August. Their European studies will begin with distance learning sessions with students of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. When they later visit Ireland, they will collaborate with students from Maynooth University in field research on Irish history and culture.

Study Abroad Programs

IDM is developing a diverse ensemble of study abroad programs. The longer-term programs, established by The Tokyo University of Science, will generally take from a semester to a year. The shorter-term programs, mostly language studies and internships, will take place during summer vacation or the end of the school year. Study abroad destinations in the coming year include the US (University of California, Davis), Germany (Leibniz University Hannover), Canada (University of British Columbia), and the UK (Homerton College, University of Cambridge).

Become an innovation leader
who can thrive in our complex age.

Japan has kept pace with the rest of the world in its digital technologies and design thinking. Yet Japan has fallen behind in systematically teaching design technologies in ways that allow them to be combined in relevant ways. The students in this department study technologies with a focus on innovation and the tackling of unsolved problems. As a new department, we take on design challenges with enthusiasm. We look forward to welcoming you to our campuses in Hokkaido and Tokyo.
