4th Japan-Lithuania Natural and Life Sciences Joint Symposium Held (10/10 Report)

On Tuesday, October 10, the 4 th Japan-Lithuania Natural and Life Sciences Joint Symposium was held at the Tokyo University of Science's Kagurazaka Campus.

This Symposium was held with the objectives of reciprocally introducing the contents of research on state-of- the-art science and technology in both Japan and Lithuania, mutual understanding of research activities between Japan and the Republic of Lithuania, which is focusing in particular on expanding the high-tech science and technology industry, and further deepening international exchange.

Along with Aurelijus Veryga, who is the Minister of Welfare, Egidijus Meilunas, who is the Lithuanian Ambassador to Japan, and Dainius H. Pauža, who is Chairman of the Research Council of Lithuania, researchers such as the Director of Lithuania's Nature Research Center, Director of the National Cancer Institute of Lithuania, and the Director of the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry visited Japan. From Japan, after a greeting from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, researchers from the University of Tokyo, University of Tsukuba, National Cancer Center Japan, and Tokyo University of Science, etc. reciprocally presented their research in various fields of specialization in natural and life sciences.

Professor Makoto Asashima (developmental biology), who is the Vice President of the Tokyo University of Science and who served as the chairman for the day, was selected in April of this year as the first foreign member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences as a researcher based in Asia, due to the reason of his "development of developmental biology and contribution to learning with Lithuania," and was also presented with a medal in July from the President of Lithuania for merits to Lithuania in science and international exchange. Because of such events as well as the Symposium, there are expectations for a favorable relationship between Lithuanian researchers and Japanese researchers, including those at TUS, to further deepen.
