A press conference was held on May 23, 2014 (Fri) at PORTA Kagurazaka (Shinjuku, Tokyo) after Professor Shinichi Komaba of the Faculty of Science Division I, Department of Applied Chemistry, Tokyo University of Science received the 2014 Resonate Award.

The Resonate Award is presented by the California Institute of Technology's Resnick Sustainability Institute. 2014 marked the first year that the institute presented the award. In addition to Professor Komaba, the other four 2014 recipients are Jay Whiteacre of Carnegie Mellon University, Javad Lavaei of Columbia University, Thomas Francisco Jaramillo of Stanford University, and Sarah Kearney.

Resonate Award Winner : Professor Shinichi Komaba of the Faculty of Science Division I, Department of Applied Chemistry
Reason for Selection : Professor Komaba was recognized for his work in creating new materials that can contribute to solving 21st century environmental and energy problems through more efficient chemical/electrical energy conversion. Komaba has researched methods for synthesizing electrode materials, as well as charge-discharge (oxidation-reduction) reactions, with a focus on rare metal-free sodium-ion batteries as a next-generation energy source. Komaba was the first in the world to develop a sodium-ion battery on par with lithium-ion batteries in terms of high capacity and stable charging/discharging.
