About the Areas of Study Pure and Applied Chemistry
Human beings cannot exist without progressing research and development in the areas of energy, materials, information (i.e., electronics and computers), biology, the environment, and space. This graduate program focuses its activities on research and development in the energy and materials fields, aiming to foster scientists having the skills needed to take on scientific and technical development in these fields in the 21st century. Areas of specialization in the department include organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and chemical engineering. Although the program naturally strives to build upon the basic knowledge acquired by students as undergraduates, this goal alone is not sufficient to drive cutting-edge research and development. As students delve deeper into their research, they inevitably come up against fields that are outside their specializations and thus become faced with the need to gain an understanding of bordering disciplines. Students must therefore develop their knowledge in new areas and foster more flexible ways of thinking. Here, the program utilizes the ''Program of Cooperation''which acknowledges the ongoing dissolution of borders between disciplines and encourages tie-ups among laboratories engaged in cutting-edge research to invite visiting instructors to its staff. The Faculty of Science and Technology thus offers an innovative curriculum that is based on collaboration with a broad range of research institutes, including the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.
