About the Areas of Study Civil Engineering
Taking a glance at the recent history of infrastructure constructions in Japan, such as the bridges linking Honshu with Shikoku island, Seikan Tunnel and Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway, it is certain that the civil engineering technologies of our country stand at one of the highest levels in the world. The important part of our efforts in our department is to educate graduate students with basic skills and professional ethics and to send out them as well-educated engineers to the fields associated with civil engineering. The curriculum of the graduate course in civil engineering is therefore set up with primary emphasis on structural mechanics, hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering materials, remote-sensing, environmental engineering, applied mechanics, earthquake engineering, and urban and regional planning on transportation and infrastructure. The graduate course is nonetheless build upon the undergraduate studies. However, the emphasis is placed upon more detailed engagement in the topics that are usually related to the research themes of their instructors. The programme can be flexibly managed in such a manner that students are allowed to attend lectures offered by the related research groups and the other departments. While students are ultimately aimed at submitting master's theses, they are also encouraged to make presentations on their research activities at conferences and workshops and to gain practical experiences in preparation of papers and presentations.
